In each figure skating discipline, there are either six or eight test levels, with the highest one being either Senior or Gold. When an athlete passes their senior or gold test, it is a huge accomplishment, marking many years of dedication to the sport, and their mastery of that discipline.
The StarSkate program consists of figure skating skills in four areas Skills, Ice Dance, Free Skate and Artistic. Each area is divided into the following levels: Star 1-5 Skills. Star 1-5 Dance.
Test sessions feature a panel of U.S. Figure Skating officials and offer skaters the opportunity to highlight their abilities and advance to the next level. When a skater passes the final test in each pathway, they earn the honor of becoming a U.S. Figure Skating Gold Medalist.
These eight levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves: forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns and Mohawks. Upon completion of the Basic 1-8 levels, skaters will have a basic knowledge of the sport, enabling them to advance to more specialized areas of skating.
The senior test, in a way, is a summary of every turn, edge and skill they learned over the years and it is expected to be performed at a superior level. The patterns required at each level are found in the U.S. Figure Skating Tests Book.
