Because of how steep and rough the trail is, the entire loop takes about 89 hours; there just isnt a lot of trail where its possible to walk at a normal pace. The first half of the route, via Eagle Peak and Bald Ridge, is especially slow and difficult due to the poor condition of the singletrack trails.
Much of the core of Mount Diablo is made up of a special rock sequence/assemblage called an ophiolite. Ophiolites originate at the spreading centers of oceans and where oceanic plates collide with continental plates. On Mount Diablo, the ophiolite is dismembered.
From mid August to late October, the East Bay area male tarantulas (Aphonopelma iodius) will be on the prowl. Their counterparts, the females, will be staying at home in burrows where they have lived for as long as twenty-five years.

A parcel of land atop the mountain was designated a state park in 1921, and much of the rest of the mountain was declared a game refuge. Due to its spiritual significance to Native Americans and its selection as the initial point for land surveys, Mount Diablo became a California Registered Historical Landmark in 1976.

Mount Diablo itself is not a volcano, but was formed in the past couple million years by the folding and faulting of the earths crust. Oak and riparian woodlands, chaparral, and grasslands comprise the mountain habitats. Trees include coast live oak, bigleaf maple, Coulter pine, and California buckeye.
Parking Directions Parking fees range from $6 per vehicle to $10 per vehicle with an 8 passenger limit. The park opens at 8:00 AM and closes at sunset each night. Mount Diablo State Park is pet-friendly and permits dogs on leashes in developed areas of the park.
Can you drive up Mount Diablo? Yes! Once you access the park via either the North Gate or South Gate road entrances ($10 vehicle entrance fee at each entrance), you may then proceed up the winding roads of Mount Diablo until you eventually reach the summit.
