PTIN applications for the upcoming year can be submitted beginning in mid-October each year. Mailed applications take about four to six weeks to process. Fill out IRS Form W-12, IRS Paid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) Application and Renewal.
Paid return preparers need to renew their PTINs every year. Generally, the renewal period begins in mid-to-late October and ends on December 31. Individuals who will be preparing returns for compensation next year must obtain or renew their PTIN before the December 31 deadline. Note.
In order to link your new online account to your existing PTIN, you will need an activation code. These codes are generally sent out automatically during open season or you can contact the PTIN helpline to obtain one.
