Created by the Housing and Community Development Act of 1978, the Housing Choice Voucher program, also known as Section 8, provides assistance to eligible low- and moderate-income families to rent housing in the private market. Eligibility for this program is based on a familys gross annual income and family size.
The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program enables the lowest income households in New York State to rent or purchase decent, safe housing in the private housing market by providing rental and homeownership assistance.
The Law. It is illegal to be denied a housing opportunity because of a lawful source of income. Lawful source of income includes income from Social Security, or any form of federal, state, or local public assistance or housing assistance including Section 8 vouchers.
New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) is no longer accepting applications for its 2021 New York City Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Waitlist Lottery.
