The Spastics Society provided sheltered workshops and day centres for people with cerebral palsy (commonly referred to as spastics at the time, despite spasticity being a symptom of only one variant of cerebral palsy), who were seen as being unemployable in mainstream society.
The Spastic Centre changed its name to Cerebral Palsy Alliance to focus attention on cerebral palsy, and pay tribute to our alliance of clients, families, staff, donors, volunteers, government and researchers.
More recently, these terms have fallen out of use and replaced with the more socially acceptable and generic disabled. The word spastic became so negatively loaded that The Spastic Society of Victoria had to change their name to Scope.
In November 1994, The Spastics Society changed its name to Scope, having decided that the word spastic had become a term of abuse that was no longer acceptable for people with cerebral palsy.
It also works in the field of imparting counseling and psychotherapy to the parents and guardians of the disabled children. Mass camps are conducted for welfare of children with disabilities.
