There are two ways to confirm that USCIS has your request for evidence (RFE). First, you can wait for USCIS to mail you a confirmation letter stating it received your RFE response. Second, you can check the USCIS online case tracker. Youll need your receipt number to check your case status.
When USCIS makes a decision on your application, we will send you a written decision notice. If we approve your application, you generally will receive an approval notice first and then receive your actual Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) a little later.
After the RFE response is submitted, the adjudicating officer of the case reviews the additional evidence and response submitted. Upon consideration, a final decision will be made. I have seen USCIS take as short as a week, to six months after submitting a response to make its final decision.
Once you receive proof of receipt from USCIS, attach it to your copy of the response packet. Upon receiving your response to the RFE, USCIS will usually take further action on your application within 60 daysbut as always, wait times can vary greatly.
A common RFE related to I-485 applications is that applicants fail to include all the supporting documents necessary to document the sponsors income. The sponsor must sufficiently evidence income and resources claimed on Form I-864, Affidavit of Support.

Overview of the USCIS Request for Evidence Process But dont panic! What is an RFE? An RFE, as the name suggests, is simply a request for more documentation. It means that the USCIS officer reviewing your application needs more information before he or she can make a decision.
Even though an RFE isnt necessarily a bad sign because you can simply provide the additional information requested, it almost always means your application will take longer to be approved. Although an RFE can be sent for any missing piece of evidence, some are more commonly requested than others.
Generally, the processing time can take anywhere from 15-60 days. If after 60 days you have not heard from USCIS, contact the National Customer Service Center and file a Service Request for an update.
