The national pretreatment program is designed to: protect POTW infrastructure, and. reduce conventional and toxic pollutant levels discharged by industries and other nondomestic wastewater sources into municipal sewer systems and into the environment.
Untreated wastewater can pollute bodies of water by introducing harmful chemicals, pathogens, and nutrients into the ecosystem. For example, untreated sewage can contain bacteria and viruses that can contaminate water sources and pose health risks to humans and wildlife.
Industrial wastewater is defined as any wastewater generated from any manufacturing, processing, institutional, commercial, or agricultural operation, or any operation that discharges other than domestic or sanitary wastewater.
There are two basic stages in the treat- ment of wastes, primary and secondary, which are outlined here. In the primary stage, solids are allowed to settle and removed from wastewater. The secondary stage uses biological processes to further purify wastewater. Sometimes, these stages are combined into one operation.
1) Wastewater discharge means the amount of water (in m3) or substance (in kg BOD/d or comparable) added /leached to a water body from a point or a non point source. 2) Sewage effluent (or discharge) means treated sewage discharged from a sewage treatment plant.
