The Charge! Program is funded through the Air Districts Transportation Fund for Clean Air Regional Fund, which provides grants to improve air quality within the nine-county Bay Area by reducing emissions of pollutants from on-road vehicles.
General air quality complaints can be reported through the Air Districts toll-free complaint line at 1-800-334-ODOR (1-800-334-6367). Wood smoke complaints can be submitted by calling 1-877-4NO-BURN (1-877-466- 2876).
The Air District is tasked with regulating stationary sources of air pollution in the nine counties that surround San Francisco Bay: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, southwestern Solano, and southern Sonoma counties.
If your window is open, you might be able to smell the pollution. But sometimes the air can be dirty and you cant see it or smell it. So you need another way to tell if the air is dirty. This is why EPA developed the Air Quality Index, which we will describe in the What is the AQI section.
Warmer and drier conditions promote the formation of ground-level ozone and result in larger, more frequent wildfires in wilderness areas, producing particulate matter that can travel thousands of miles and affect air quality across the country.
