Free School Meals for Kids Bill Signed Into Law This legislation provides state reimbursement for a free breakfast and lunch to all students at schools participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP). The Free School Meals for Kids Program will start on July 1, 2023.
Any district, group of schools in a district, or individual school with 25% or more identified studentschildren eligible for free school meals who are identified by means other than an individual household applicationcan participate in CEP.
Low-income children are eligible to receive reduced-price or free meals at school. Children in households with incomes below 130 percent of the poverty level or those receiving SNAP or TANF qualify for free meals.
Breakfast, lunch, and after school meals are free for all New York City public school students. Although students no longer need to apply to receive free meals, we do encourage families to complete the online Family Income Inquiry form so that your school(s) can receive funding for the program.
