The first Reggae on The River was held in 1984, and it was last held in 2018.
Reggae on the River began in 1984 as a benefit for the Mateel Community Center, a nonprofit for southern Humboldt County, after an arsonist burnt down the community hall in Garberville.
After a transfer to Peoples Productions under the name Reggae Rising, a return of its permit to the Mateel and a partnership with High Times magazines events company, Reggae on the River was cancelled in 2019 for financial reasons and hasnt been held since.
The festival later partnered with High Times magazines events company but High Times cancelled the show in 2019 due to financial issues. COVID compounded the festivals problems from 2020 to 2023. With some attempts at Reggae not on the River but at the Mateel.
The festival started in 1984 to raise money for the Mateel Community Center to rebuild the community hall in Garberville that was burnt by an arsonist. The festival is held at Frenchs Camp, north of Piercy, about 10 miles (18 km) south of Garberville, CA.
