In 1916 the Shevlin-Hixon Lumber Company built a mill on the west bank of the Deschutes River and Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company built the Mill A complex on the east bank. For the next 78 years, the mills dominated Bends economy, pumping money and business into the town.
The mighty Deschutes River runs through the heart of Bend and we wouldnt want it any other way. After all, the city built Oregons first urban whitewater park on that river. With miles of hiking and biking trails through town and Mt. Bachelor and Smith Rock nearby, Bend is famous for world-class recreation.
Brooks-Scanlons Mill A closed in 1983 and was in a state of near ruin before being restored in the early 1990s. The old brick powerhouse buildings and their three towering smokestacks still stand, silently testifying to the districts colorful past.

Historic preservation is near and dear to our hears here at the Old Mill District. For nearly a century, timber production was the unchallenged king in Bend, most of it taking place along our stretch of the river. The first of the big mills, operated by the Shevlin-Hixon Co., opened in March 1916.
