Please ship muscle specimens on wet ice, not dry ice. Submitted muscle biopsies must be. at least 1 cm3. Place the moist-gauze-wrapped muscle. specimen into the provided labeled. Fill one biohazard bag with the. specimen container and seal it. Place the wet ice bag inside the. Ship the container to UF Health.
Your provider will only need to remove a small piece of tissue from the designated muscle. Your doctor takes the tissue sample by inserting a biopsy needle into your muscle. If a larger sample is required, your healthcare provider may make an incision in your skin (open biopsy) and remove a larger section of muscle.
Muscle biopsy samples must be frozen with liquid nitrogen immediately after excision and maintained at -80C until analysis.
Using pre-chilled forceps, lower the specimen and cork/mold into the isopentane for approximately 10-20 sec. Place the frozen specimen into a pre-cooled container. Keep specimen and container on dry ice at all times until transfer to a -80 C freezer.
Securely seal the primary container. Place the primary container in a secondary shipping container, which should also contain enough absorbent material to prevent any leakage from escaping outside the container. Label the shipping container with Formaldehyde precaution sticker. Ship at ambient temperature.
