Major vegetation types include California black oak (Quer- cus kelloggii), ponderosa pine, white fir (Abies concolor) mixed conifer, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii) mixed conifer, and mixed evergreen forests. Interspersed within the forests are chaparral stands, riparian forests, and meadows.
The mid-montane zone has a mixed forest of white fir, Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, live oak, black oak, and tanoak, depending on location. North of Tahoe, the mid-montane forest has more white fir and Douglas-fir, and less ponderosa pine than further south. Jeffrey pine occurs on ultramafic lava soils.
The Sierra Nevada Mountains are located in eastern California. They stretch from the north of the state to the south, the southern ending being near Los Angeles. The southern parts of the Sierra Range include the highest mountains, such as Mount Whitney and Yosemite National Park.
