The beaver has always been an important part of Oregon. While Oregon was being settled the fur trade was a staple to the economy, earning Oregon the nickname the Beaver state. While beavers are no longer economically important, beavers create important habitats for fish and other wildlife.
In 1969, the Legislature recognized the American Beaver by naming it Oregons state animal.
Benny Beaver was adopted as Oregon State Universitys mascot in 1952 after the school had a reported three previous mascots. The first mascot in 1893 was a coyote named Jimmie, owned by M.M.H. Kriebel. In 1909, a second mascot appeared on the scene.
It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 27,564, and admissions are selective, with an acceptance rate of 89%. The university offers 98 bachelors degrees, has an average graduation rate of 68%, and a student-faculty ratio of 18:1.
Oregons nickname, The Beaver State, originated during a time when fur hats were fashionable and Oregon streams were an important source of beaver pelts. Such massive hunting of the beaver led to a sharp decline in its population. This led the Oregon government to intervene before they were hunted to extinction.
