The Schema Domains define 5 broad categories of emotional needs of a child (connection, mutuality, reciprocity, flow and autonomy). When these needs are not met, schemas develop that lead to unhealthy life patterns.
The Brief Early Schema Questionnaire (BESQ) is a 24-item screening tool that helps clinicians rapidly assess maladaptive patterns of thoughts, behaviours and emotions.
Schemas are core beliefs or stories that we have developed about ourselves and others in relationships. When we are unware of these stories we are more likely to engage in behaviors that create a self-fulfilling prophecy and reinforce these beliefs.
Schema Mode Inventory (SMI) Developed in 2008 and revised in 2009, Jeffery Young and his team created a questionnaire for measuring the strength of Schema Modes. Using 124 questions, it measures 14 modes, including Child Modes, Maladaptive Coping Modes, Dysfunctional Parent Modes and Healthy Adult.
