Basic manure sample test results include moisture, total nitrogen (N), ammonium N, organic N, phosphorus as P2O5 and potassium as K2O. Micronutrients and additional information can also be requested for analysis. For liquid manure, nutrients are often reported in pounds per 1,000 gallons of manure.
As a minimum, all manure samples should be analyzed for total nitrogen (N), total phosphorus (P), total potassium (K), and moisture content (or dry matter). You may choose to have your sample analyzed for ammonium-N as well. Other tests may include micronutrients and total salts. Total N is often reported as TN or TKN.

At the very least, measure total nitrogen (N), total phosphorus (P), total potassium (K), and moisture content. We also highly recommend having your manure tested for ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) content. Please note that none of the nutrients in manure are 100% available the first year.
A laboratory analysis is the preferred and most accurate of the two methods. An analysis measures the nutrient concentration in manure produced on a specific site.
