As a member of the OVC, Tennessee State is one of three Division I HBCU athletic programs that are not members of either the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) or Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), whose members are primarily HBCU institutions.
Complications associated with the Civil War prevented the formal designation in Tennessee until 1869, when the former East Tennessee University became the states land grant institution. In 1879, the legislature changed the institutions name to the University of Tennessee.
In 1968, the state legislature formally dropped Agricultural Industrial from the universitys name, which became Tennessee State University. The School of Allied Health Professions and the School of Business were created in 1974. In addition, the School of Nursing was established in 1979.
