About Jackson Ward Freed slaves began moving into the neighborhood during Reconstruction, and by 1920 Jackson Ward was one of the most active and well-known centers of African-American life in the country. Jackson Ward hosted a thriving entertainment district centered on the famed Hippodrome theatre.
Jackson Ward is a neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia with a population of 269. Jackson Ward is in Richmond City County.
By now, many people have heard Jackson Ward described as Black Wall Street, and the cradle of Black capitalism; these monikers point to the communitys reputation as a hotbed of Black business in the late 19th century through the first half of the following century.
With the voting power of the neighborhood diminished the city council saw no need for a majority Black voting ward and dismantled Jackson Ward as its own voting ward. Even with its political power limited through Jim Crow segregation, Jackson Ward grew into a bastion of Black business and entrepreneurship.
