The Providence Plantations were the first white settlements in Rhode Island. The clergyman Roger Williams, banished by the General Court of Massachusetts Bay for propagating new and dangerous opinions, founded the Providence Plantations in June 1636.
In November 2020, the states voters approved an amendment to the state constitution formally dropping and Providence Plantations from its full name. Its official nickname is the Ocean State, a reference to its 400 mi (640 km) of coastline and the large bays and inlets that make up about 14% of its total area.

The Royal Charter of 1663 was a document granted by King Charles II of England to the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. It allowed settlers in Rhode Island to govern their own colony and guaranteed their individual freedom of religion.
This Charter guaranteed an unprecedented level of religious liberty. This made Rhode Island a refuge for all persecuted for their consciences sake. It also allowed Rhode Island to elect its own government. This included the right to elect their own governor not have one appointed by the monarchy.
