The origination of the name South Orange is not known. Tradition holds that the name first appears in print at this time, in a newspaper ad offering wood for sale placed by Nathan Squier in Woods Gazette.
They arrived on territory now encompassing Newark, the four Oranges, and other nearby municipalities. Previously referred to as the Mountain Society area, the name Orange was first used and adopted by the settlers in 1780. It was derived from the name of Englands ruling house, the House of Orange.
South Orange was part of Newark until 1806, when what is now the Oranges and Maplewood were set off as Orange Township. The name Orange came into use in the second half of the 18th century, and was officially adopted by a meeting of the inhabitants in 1780.
However, Orange and East Orange are relatively urban and working-class, while South Orange and West Orange remain affluent suburban enclaves. In addition, the residents of Orange and East Orange are predominantly African-American, while those of South Orange and West Orange are predominantly white.
South Orange is a wealthy and diverse township and has one of the largest Jewish communities in Essex County, along with nearby Livingston and Millburn.
