The Auditor General is a constitutional officer of the State of Illinois charged with reviewing the obligation, expenditure, receipt and use of public funds.
The Auditor General is nominated by the Legislative Audit Commission, appointed by majorities of both Houses of the Legislature, and serves a ten-year term. The Illinois Constitution of 1970 created the Office of the Auditor General as an arm of the Legislature.
The Auditor General is appointed by the Governor in Council by commission under the Great Seal, after consultation with the leader of every recognized party in the Senate and the House of Commons and after approval of the appointment by resolution of the Senate and the House of Commons.
The Auditor Generals office performs several types of audits to review State agencies. The Auditor General is required by the Illinois State Auditing Act to conduct, as is appropriate to the agencys operations, a financial audit and/or compliance examination of every State agency at least once every two years.
The State Auditors Office (office) is responsible for evaluating departments administration and management of public funds and programs to assure that the proper checks and balances are in place. In addition, the office evaluates departments compliance with laws and regulations.

What does the Auditor General audit? By Illinois law, every State agency undergoes a compliance examination and/or financial audit at least once every two years.
