Eligibility Requirements Must be enrolled for a full course load or approved for reduced course load before applying for CPT. Must have a valid CPT employment/internship/training offer related to the students major area of study.
If you are having initial academic difficulties, a temporary illness or a medical condition that prevents full-time enrollment, or you need fewer than a full course load in your last term to complete your program, you may qualify for a reduced course load (RCL).
RCL allows F-1 and M-1 students to attend classes part-time. In addition, for illness or medical cases, a DSO may excuse a student from all classes for up to 12 months for an F-1 or five months for an M-1. During this time, they remain in F-1 and M-1 status.
If an F-1 student is having specified initial academic difficulties, a temporary illness or medical condition, or needs fewer courses than a full course load in his/her last term to complete the program of study, DSOs may authorize a reduced course load (RCL).

With proper authorization, an RCL allows F-1 and M-1 students to drop below full-time enrollment without losing their student status. This is possible under specific conditions such as academic difficulties, medical issues or during a students final term.
CPT eligiblity requires that F-1 students: Be in valid F-1 immigration status for at least two full-time semesters (1 academic year) before becoming eligible for CPT. Enroll for Internship/Field Study/Practicum Course Credit OR be completing a Degree Requirement.
