As environments change, people must learn new skills in order continue to meet the environmental demands. Making a phone (or video) call is an example of adaptive behavior that changed over time. The skills needed to make a call today are very different from the skills that were required 20 years ago.
The Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System, Third Edition (ABAS-III) is a multidimensional and standardised assessment tool used to assess the functional skills necessary for the daily living of individuals from birth to 89 years of age.
Adaptive behavior rating scales are designed to address the following areas: Communication: Interacting with others, talking, writing, using the phone. Self-Care: Eating, dressing, hygiene, toileting, grooming. Home-Living: Caring for clothes, housekeeping, property maintenance, food preparation, cooking, budgeting.
Participants adaptive behavior was measured using the DABS. The DABS was developed using the item response theory method to include items reflecting conceptual, social, and practical skills, which are three essential components of adaptive behavior [23].
There are ten areas of adaptive skills: self-care, communication skills, self-direction, social skills, leisure skills, home or school living, functional academics, community use, work, and health and safety.
