The optimum asphalt content is determined by judging the appearance of the asphalt through the pyrex dishes. The optimum binder content should be determined by observing the excessive mixture draindown, or filling of un- compacted air voids through the pyrex dish.
There are actually 5 gradation specifications, each corresponding to a different maximum aggregate size: 37.5 mm, 25 mm, 19 mm, 12.5 mm and 9.5 mm.
Asphalt contents are determined by measuring the change in mass between the original dry RAP sample and the mass of the final residue aggregate sample after the asphalt is burned off in the ignition furnace. One shortcoming of the process is that a small portion of the aggregate is usually lost in the burning process.
The final acceptable asphalt content range is 5.1%-5.7%. Meanwhile, considering a long-term ing performance, the high range acceptable range has a high potential for rutting because the plant-produced mixes are permitted to have 0.5% variability.
By the Ignition Method A method for the rapid determination of asphalt content has been developed in which the weight of a sample before and after re- moval of the asphalt by burning is utilized.
