The Missouri Property Tax Credit (or circuit breaker) helps older adults and Missourians with disabilities living on fixed incomes stay in their homes by providing a credit towards the cost of their property taxes. However, the credit has not been adjusted since 2008 and is losing some of its benefit.
For renters or part year owners: Total household income for single filers must be $27,200 or less; for married couples filing a combine return, total household income must be $29,200 or less.
The program now allows those taxpayers who are 62 years of age or older to receive a credit on future years tax bills that essentially freezes their property taxes on their primary residence to the tax bill amount from the year of application/eligibility.
Veterans who have a 100% disability rating in Missouri may receive a credit up to $1,100 for property taxes on their primary residence. Former Prisoners of War also qualify for this exemption.
Circuit breakers are offered to renters and homeowners in 16 states, only home owners in 1 state and only renters in 1 state; in 8 states the programs are limited to only the elderly or disabled and in all 18 states there is a maximum income level after which a taxpayer no longer qualifies for a refund.

The credit is for those who pay more than the threshold percentage assigned to their level of income. An example would be, if an applicant made $10,000 and paid $480 in property taxes, the applicant would be eligible for a credit of $80 as long as they meet the other requirements.
The Missouri Property Tax Credit Claim gives back a portion of the rent or real estate tax paid for that year by persons 65 and older, or persons 18-64 that receive SSI, SSD, or Veterans Disability. The credit is for a maximum of $750 for renters and $1,100 for owners who owned and occupied their home.
