Yes, you may claim the child tax credit (CTC)/additional child tax credit (ACTC) or credit for other dependents (ODC) as well as the child and dependent care credit on your return if you qualify for those credits.
You can claim the Child Tax Credit by entering your children and other dependents on Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, and attaching a completed Schedule 8812, Credits for Qualifying Children and Other Dependents.
Who can claim both? Many taxpayers qualify for both the CTC and ACTC in the same tax year. For example, if youre eligible for the full credit of $2,200 in 2025 but only owe $1,000 in taxes, youll use $1,000 of the credit to reduce your liability to zero.
Purpose. You may qualify to claim the 2023 credit for child and dependent care expenses if you (and your spouse/RDP) paid someone in California to care for your child or other qualifying person while you worked or looked for employment. You must have earned income to do so.
Child Tax Credit Not eligible?? Youve entered something wrong. Your child may be too old (over 16). Your income is too high. Your income is too low. You are the custodial parent and the non-custodial parent is claiming the dependent this year.

People also ask

Child tax credit allows taxpayers to claim a tax credit of up to $2,000 per child. When the dependent is not eligible for the child tax credit, they may be eligible for the nonrefundable $500 credit for other dependents. The qualifying child must have a valid SSN by the due date of the return including extensions.
To claim the credit, you (and your spouse, if youre married) must have income earned from a job and you must have paid for the care so that you could work or look for work. You can claim from 20% to 35% of your care expenses up to a maximum of $3,000 for one person, or $6,000 for two or more people (tax year 2024).
