Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a multisystem disorder generally seen in children and young adults, manifesting with the symptomatic triad of thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and acute kidney injury. These symptoms are often preceded by a prodrome of bloody diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and weakness.
Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is very serious complication of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infection. It can lead to kidney failure, permanent health problems, and even death. Seek medical care immediately if you notice signs of HUS.
With aggressive treatment, more than 90% of patients survive the acute phase of HUS, and only about 9% may develop ESRD. Roughly one-third of persons with HUS have abnormal kidney function many years later, and a few require long-term dialysis.
Symptoms of HUS include vomiting, bloody diarrhea (loose stool/poop), stomach pain, fever, chills, and headache. As infection progresses, persons may experience fatigue, weakness, fainting, bruising, and paleness.
Serotype O157:H7 is the most well-recognized E. coli strain responsible for global outbreaks of bloody diarrhea and HUS. The condition arises from the development of Shiga-like toxins that disrupt the intestinal cell membranes.

EHEC pathogens are primarily transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food. Since the natural reservoir of EHEC is mainly the digestive tract of cattle, raw or undercooked meat, raw (unpasteurized) dairy products and occasionally raw vegetable products are the main food products affected.
