Thomas Nelson, the fourth governor of Virginia, a Revolutionary War hero, and signer of the Declaration of Independence, was the schools original namesake, but school officials decided to change the name as he was also a slave owner.
This new name emphasizes this colleges community and sends a welcoming and inclusive signal to the students they serve and those they seek to serve, N.L. Bishop, chair of the state board, said in a statement.
The college adopted its current name in July 2022, having formerly been known as Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) since its inception.
In 1987, the name of the college was officially changed to Edgecombe Community College. In 1997, the college changed from the quarter system to the semester system as mandated by the North Carolina Community College System. ECC is one of the 58 colleges that make up the North Carolina Community College System.
The name change is intended to distance the school from images that go against the institutions mission, vision, values and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. John Tyler, a Virginia native and the 10th president of the United States, owned slaves and was a supporter of the Confederacy.
