Canada Research Chairs are highly prestigious awards established by the Canadian Government in 2000. The key objective of the program continues to be met by providing human and material resources to Canadian universities that have greatly enhanced their research excellence and international competitiveness.
Tier 1 CRCs are for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. Nominees must be full professors or associate professors who are expected to be promoted to full professor within one or two years of the nomination date.
Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. A Chair is tenable for five years and renewable once. For each Tier 2 Chair, the institution receives $100,000 annually for five years.
