GPO provides public access to the official publications and information of the Government. GPOs mission can be traced to the requirement in Article I of the Constitution that each House keep a journal of its proceedings and from time to time publish the same.
GPO Access is the digital library of the Government Printing Office, the official publisher of federal government information. It came on-line in 1995, and most of the documents available in its database are from that date or later.
GPO is also responsible for the production and distribution of information products and services for all three branches of the Federal Government. In December 2014 legislation was passed that changed the agencys name from Government Printing Office to Government Publishing Office.
