How organ matching works. When a transplant hospital accepts a person as a transplant candidate, it enters medical datainformation such as the persons blood type and medical urgency and the location of the transplant hospitalabout that candidate into UNOS computerized network.
United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) was awarded the initial OPTN contract on September 30, 1986, and continues to administer the OPTN today.
Using a combination of donor and candidate medical dataincluding blood type, medical urgency and location of the transplant and donor hospitalsUNOS system generates a rank-order of candidates to be offered each organ. This match is unique to each donor and each organ.
