Minnesota allows a state income tax subtraction (deduction) for K-12 education-related expenses. The subtraction allows up to $2,500 to be subtracted for each dependent in grades 7-12 and up to $1,625 for each dependent in grades K-6.
In January your school will send you Form 1098-T, a tuition statement that shows the education expenses you paid for the year. Youll use that form to enter the corresponding amounts on your tax return to claim an education tax credit or deduction.
Beginning with tax year 2023, you may qualify for a Child Tax Credit of $1,750 per qualifying child, with no limit on the number of children claimed. This is a refundable credit, meaning you can receive a refund even if you do not owe tax.
The American Opportunity Tax Credit Can be claimed in amounts up to $2,500 per student, calculated as 100% of the first $2,000 in college costs and 25% of the next $2,000. May be used toward required course materials (books, supplies and equipment) as well as tuition and fees.
