The first test (federal credit times 20%) results in an Indiana adoption credit of $2,400 for each child. However, because the couple previously claimed $150 in credit for each child in 2021, the maximum Indiana adoption credit per child is $2,350 ($2,500-$150).
To report your adoption expenses and claim the adoption credit or exclusion: Use Form 8839: Qualified Adoption Expenses. Attach the appropriate records to the form.
Taxpayers complete Form 8862 and attach it to their tax return if: Their earned income credit (EIC), child tax credit (CTC)/additional child tax credit (ACTC), credit for other dependents (ODC) or American opportunity credit (AOTC) was reduced or disallowed for any reason other than a math or clerical error.
To claim the Refundable Adoption Tax Credit, complete Form MO-RAC, Form MO-TC, and submit along with Form MO-1040.
