A guarantor is a person who can confirm the identity of the applicant for registration or the Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS).
Family members can only act as guarantors if they meet all specified criteria, and a parent or legal guardian cannot act as a guarantor for their child or dependent adult.
The guarantor must complete and sign the Guarantor Declaration form, sign and date each copy of the applicant's identity documents, sign and date one printed photo, and confirm information about the applicant if contacted by Indigenous Services Canada.
The guarantor must be at least 18 years old, have known the applicant personally for at least 2 years, and either be registered under the Indian Act or employed in an eligible occupation.
If an eligible guarantor cannot be found, you must provide two references and complete the Statutory Declaration in lieu of Guarantor form (83-170E).
