An EIA helps the University make sure our policies, procedures and practices do what they are intended to do and are inclusive for staff, students and visitors. They also enable us to provide an audit trail that we have met our legal obligations.
There is a legal obligation to undertake Equality Impact Assessments (EIAs) to assess the impact of your actions on people of different racial groups, disabled people, and men and women, including men and women.
Carrying out an EIA involves assessing the likely (or actual) effects of policies on people in respect of protected equality characteristics including age, disability, race and sexual orientationplease see overleaf for further detail and the full list of protected characteristics.
EIAs are about making comparisons between groups of employees, service users or stakeholders to identify differences in their needs and/or requirements. If the difference is disproportionate, then the policy may have a detrimental impact on some and not others.
Whilst recording the steps taken in seeking to meet the duty is an important way to demonstrate compliance with the duty, there is no legal requirement to publish duty assessment documentation (often referred to as equality impact assessments).
