Can a physician assistant practice independently? No, a PA cannot practice independently. Every PA must be supervised by a licensed physician (either M.D. or D.O.). The supervising physician is responsible for all medical services provided by the PA under their supervision and for following each patients progress.
While physician assistants can do many things, they cannot perform all the duties of a medical doctor. For example, physician assistants can assist in surgery, but we cannot perform surgery. Physician assistants do not become PAs as stepping stones on their path to becoming medical doctors.
PAs should not be used to undertake home visits without a supervising GP present. They should not perform tasks for a GP on a care home ward round, unless accompanied by a GP supervisor. GPs who supervise PAs should familiarise themselves with the above guidance.
