Texas Senate Bill 159 was signed by Governor Greg Abbott on May 13, 2023. The new law amends the Texas Public Accountancy Act to allow CPA candidates and students to begin taking the CPA Exam after completing 120 credit hours, to include 21 hours of upper-level accounting. The new law takes effect on Sept. 1, 2023.
Students must complete their degree requirements within 150 semester credit hours. If you go over this limit, you will be charged 30-hour or 45-hour charges. For more information on these charges: See Three-Attempt Rule.
In order to meet CPA Exam requirements in Texas, candidates are required to complete 150 semester hours or 225 quarter hours.
For example: If your approved degree plan requires 120 semester credit hours, and you are subject to the 30 Hour Rule, for every credit hour you attempt beyond 150 (120 + 30), you will be charged at the out-of-state tuition rate for each semester for which you enroll after you are exceeding.
