NYCHA is currently not accepting applications for its Section 8 program, as the general Section 8 waitlist is currently closed to the public. NYCHA is only accepting referrals for its Section 8 waitlist for specific categories.
What does it mean when an Applicant is on the Preliminary Wait List for Section 8? The Preliminary Wait List is a pool of applicants waiting to be docHubed for an eligibility interview. It is the initial stage of the application process, upon submission of your application to NYCHA.
You should receive an acknowledgement letter from NYCHA within 30 days of receiving your application. Your application will be good for two years from the day it is received.
During the eligibility interview, the applicants family size, family composition, housing priority, total family income, Social Security numbers and citizenship/immigration status are verified.
NYCHA administers the largest Section 8 program in the country. Approximately 85,000 Section 8 vouchers and over 25,000 owners currently participate in the program. The New York City Housing Preservation Development and New York State Homes and Community Renewal also operate Section 8 programs in New York City.
