This is a very interesting national park. It is right next to a large industrial area with a view of the Chicago skyline in sight. Making it not quite feel like a NP. If you are in the area then I would recommend making your way over for a little hike or a nice picnic on the beaches.
Indiana Dunes State Park sits on about 3 miles of the Lake Michigan shoreline. But only a fraction of that, roughly 1/3 of a mile, is where swimming is normally allowed at the beach. And swimming is only allowed at this beach when lifeguards are present, regardless of the wave heights.
