The Epworth sleepiness scale results range from 0 to 24. Results from 0 to 10 show average (normal) daytime sleepiness. A result under 10 may not be cause for concern or it could identify you have trouble sleeping (insomnia). A result from 11 to 24 indicates excessive (abnormal) daytime sleepiness.
The scale has a 5-point Likert type rating (1=never, 2=very little/rarely, 3=sometimes, 4=most of the time, 5=almost all the time). Total scores range between 840 and higher scores indicate presence of much more severe sleep-related problems.
Propensity for dozing is rated for each situation on a 4-point scale, from 0, indicating would never doze, to 3, indicating a high chance of dozing. Adding the scores for each of the 8 questions yields a total score ranging from 0-24. Interpretation: An ESS score 10 suggests excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS).
6 to 10: High daytime sleepiness (normal). 11 to 12: Mild excessive daytime sleepiness. 13 to 15: Moderate excessive daytime sleepiness. 16 to 24: Severe excessive daytime sleepiness.
6-10 normal daytime sleepiness. 11-12 mild daytime symptoms. 13-15 moderate daytime symptoms. 16-24 severe daytime symptoms.
