PEMDAS is an acronym that reminds us of the sequence of steps to follow when solving mathematical expressions with multiple operations. P stands for Parentheses (sometimes called Brackets). E stands for Exponents (sometimes called Indices). M stands for Multiplication. D stands for Division. A stands for Addition.
One popular mnemonic for PEMDAS is: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. Each word in this phrase helps remember the steps: Please (Parentheses) Excuse (Exponents) My (Multiplication) Dear (Division) Aunt (Addition) Sally (Subtraction)
In fact, PEMDAS isnt a mathematical law at all. It is merely an agreed-upon convention to work linear math problems. Math does have many laws or properties that come into play and must be considered in the PEMDAS process, and PEMDAS is subservient to these laws.
The BODMAS rule follows the order of the BODMAS acronym, i.e. B Brackets, O Order of powers or roots, D Division, M Multiplication A Addition, and S Subtraction. The BODMAS rule states that mathematical expressions with multiple operations need to be solved from left to right in the order of BODMAS.
Mnemonics. Mnemonic acronyms are often taught in primary schools to help students remember the order of operations. The acronym PEMDAS, which stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction, is common in the United States and France.
