Geology. Fremont Peak lies along the Rocky Ridge fault, and is the largest of many small pendants and septa of pre-Cretaceous metasedimentary rocks in the deeply eroded granitic terrain of the northern Gabilan Range.
The park was opened in 1936 and was named Fremont Peak State Park to honor John C. Fremont, known as an American explorer and mapmaker. He led several expeditions across the American West and planted an American flag a top Fremont Peak in 1846 in a series of events that sparked the Bear Flag Revolt.
Historical Landmark On March 6, 1846, Captain John C. Frmont built a fort here on Gabilan (Gavilan) Peak (Fremont Peak). He unfurled his colors and for four days awaited the attack of a force of Californians. The battle did not materialize by the night of March 9, and Frmont broke camp and departed for Oregon.
The recorded history of the Fremont area began on June 6, 1797, when Mission San Jos was founded by the Spaniard Father Fermn de Lasun. The Mission was established at the site of the Ohlone village of Oroysom. The tribe lived between present-day San Francisco and Monterey and more lands eastward.
Open year round. Day use hours are from 8am to 30 minutes after Sunset.
