The granitic rocks were likely formed as a southern extension of the Sierra Nevada about 80 to 100 million years ago when an ancestral Pacific Plate (the Farallon Plate) was colliding with the North American Plate. The denser oceanic Farallon Plate sank beneath the continental plate in a process called subduction.
Previously called Gavilan Peak, it is now named for John C. Frmont, an American explorer and a Captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers at the time. In 1846, he and a crew of 60 armed surveyors mounted the peak to assess its military value. The peak commands the inland approach from Monterey.
Big Basin Redwoods State Park is Californias oldest State Park, established in 1902. Home to the largest continuous stand of Ancient Coast Redwoods south of San Francisco, the park consists of Old Growth and recovering Redwood Forest, with mixed conifer, oaks, chaparral, and riparian habitats.
