An organization that fails to file the required information return (Form 990, Form 990-EZ, or Form 990-PF) or e-Postcard (Form 990-N) for three consecutive tax years will automatically lose its tax-exempt status.
Form 990-N (e-Postcard) is an annual notice. Form 990 is the IRS primary tool for gathering information about tax-exempt organizations, educating organizations about tax law requirements and promoting compliance. Organizations also use the Form 990 to share information with the public about their programs.
The IRS requires that a nonprofit organization file some version of the 990 if its gross receipts are over $50,000. If gross receipts are $50,000 or below, only IRS Form 990-N (e-Postcard) need be filed. The California Attorney General has different filing requirements for charities.
IRS Form 990 data can be obtained from many sources, including the IRS. In addition, there are portions of the IRS Form 990, such as a roster of the board, leadership compensation, and governance information, one would not find in an audited financial statement.
Nonprofits with annual revenue of $500,000 or more must file the Form 990.
