FERPA defines directory information as information contained in the education records of a student that would not generally be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed.
By choosing to withhold directory information, the student will be marked confidential in the database. The student will then be required to conduct all business in person, with identification.
This law protects the privacy of student education records from kindergarten through graduate school. FERPA applies to all schools that receive funds through an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education, and thus most postsecondary schools are covered by FERPA.
The Act also amended the exception to FERPAs general consent rule that allows schools to disclose personally identifiable information from students education records without consent if the disclosure is necessary to comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena.
Exceptions to Written Parental Consent Requirement Develop, validate, or administer predictive tests. Administer student aid programs. Improve instruction.
