If a state regulates speech-language pathology support personnel (i.e., under the term of assistant, aide, paraprofessional, apprentice, etc.), then individuals who wish to become employed in that state must meet the state requirements for practice under a licensed and ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist.
In order to obtain a license as a speech-language pathology assistant, the individual must have (a) a baccalaureate degree with an emphasis in communicative sciences and disorders, (b) show proof of completion of no fewer than 24 semester hours in speech-language pathology/audiology, and (c) no fewer than 25 hours of
To meet ASHA certification requirements, the speech-language pathology assistant student must complete 100 clinical hours under the supervision of an ASHA-certified SLP. To ensure compliance with state requirements, the student should contact their state regulatory agency.
Mandatory Requirements Complete 100 hours of clinical field work (also called clinical practicum or on-the-job hours) as an SLPA student or SLPA under the supervision of an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist. Observation or simulation hours cannot be used toward this requirement.
Students may still be in the process of completing observation hours when submitting applications to graduate school, but most SLP programs require completion of all 25 hours before engaging in graduate clinical work.

The applicant must complete a minimum of 400 clock hours of supervised clinical experience in the practice of speech-language pathology. Twenty-five hours must be spent in guided clinical observation, and 375 hours must be spent in direct client/patient contact.
You absolutely should work as an SLPA first, at least for a year before going to grad school. So many of us went straight into grad school after getting our bachelors in SLP and are kicking ourselves because we now realize its not what we thought it was ed out to be.
