Puritans believed that reading the Bible was important to achieving salvation and, therefore, teaching children to read was a priority in their colonial centers. The New England Primer, first published in Boston in 1690 and used by students through the nineteenth century, was seen as a means to advance literacy.
The New England Primer was the first reading primer designed for the American colonies. It became the most successful educational textbook published in 17th-century colonial United States and it became the foundation of most schooling before the 1790s.
Children learned: Alphabet and phonics. Basic reading skills. Moral and religious lessons through Bible verses and catechisms.
The first Puritan attempt at their own educational manual was Benjamin Harriss Protestant Tutor (1679) (3), which sold for eight pence and contained many selections later found in New-England Primer, including the roman letters, the Syllabarium, the Lords Prayer, the Creed, the Ten Commandments, the John Rogers
The Puritans believed they were doing Gods work. Hence, there was little room for compromise. Harsh punishment was inflicted on those who were seen as straying from Gods work. There were cases when individuals of differing faiths were hanged in Boston Common.

The New-England Primer, the principal textbook for millions of colonists and early Americans. First compiled and published about 1688 by Benjamin Harris, a British journalist who emigrated to Boston, the primer remained in use for more than 150 years.
Included were the alphabet, vowels, consonants, double letters, and syllabaries of two letters to six letter syllables. The 90-page work contained religious maxims, woodcuts, alphabetical assistants, acronyms, catechism answers, and moral lessons.
