A Casualty Assistance Officer (CAO) is assigned to help the Primary Next Of Kin (PNOK) with the burial process and to ensure the PNOK is aware of and gains access to any entitlements.
The Role of the CACO The specific duties of the CACO are to: Personally notify the NOK of the casualty and apprise them of general circumstances surrounding the casualty, based on the facts that they have.
The Casualty Assistance Center serves as the primary point of contact for surviving spouses or other family members of active duty and retired service members. The staff handles notification of next-of-kin, coordinates casualty assistance officers, and briefs surviving family members on their benefits.
CASUALTY NOTIFICATION OFFICER (CNO) The CNO is responsible for notifying the Primary Next of Kin (PNOK) and Secondary Next of Kin (SNOK) and any other person listed on the Soldiers Record of Emergency Data (DD Form 93).
In the case of a death or serious injury, the Primary Next of Kin (PNOK) will be notified, by a uniformed service member, within 24 hours of the accident. These service members are called Casualty Assistance Calls Officers (CACO). Notification will only be made between the hours of 0500 and 0000 (5am - midnight).
