I now present seven principles for effective supervision in the context of statutory child and family social work - (i) collaboration, (ii) thinking aloud, (iii) emotional reflection in relation to casework, (iv) explicit identification of need, risk, harm, and strengths, (v) focusing on parent and child-defined ideas
The five steps (supervision of pre-conference or pre observation, observation of classroom teaching, lesson observation or analysis of feedback strategy, supervision conference and post-conference analysis supervision) are the main requirements in clinical supervision.
(1) Be alert and responsive; (2) Know where the child is; (3) Be able to see or hear the child; (4) Be near enough to the child to render immediate assistance; and (5) Provide supervision appropriate to the individual age, needs, capabilities, activities, and location of the child.
Carroll (1996) developed a comprehensive approach to supervision/consultation which connects goals, functions and tasks that are subsequently represented in the seven tasks of supervision: Creating a learning relationship, teaching, evaluating, monitoring ethical issues, counselling, consulting and monitoring
The clinical supervision process includes 5 important steps: Pre-conference with the teacher. Observation of classroom. Analyzing and interpreting observation and determining conference approach. Post-conference with the teacher. Critique of previous four steps.
