Your Railroad Retirement Board disability benefits will last until your full retirement age. The disability you receive from the RRB is not supposed to supplant your retirement benefits.
A five-month waiting period beginning with the month after the month of the disabilitys onset is required before railroad retirement disability annuity payments can begin. However, an applicant need not wait until this five-month period is over to file for benefits.
To receive an occupational disability annuity, you must: have a current connection with the railroad industry, and; have 240 months of creditable railroad service, or have 120 months of creditable railroad service and be at least age 60, and; be permanently disabled for work in your regular railroad occupation.
The RRB typically makes a decision within 100 days from the date you filed your application.
Without documentation, it is almost impossible to win a disability claim (even if you are, in fact, disabled). In other words, its not just about your medical conditions its about the documentation of those conditions. For example, the RRB requires that medical records have exam findings.
