Emissions Inspection Requirements Any vehicle older than six (6) years old, and that is model year 1968 or newer for non-diesel vehicles, or 1998 and newer diesel vehicles, must receive an emissions test yearly. Diesel vehicles 1997 older and Heavy Duty Diesels (14,000lbs GVWR) are exempt from emissions testing.
A vehicle may qualify for a waiver if it has: failed at least two emissions inspections. received emissions-related repairs from an ASE-certified mechanic or recognized repair facility. fulfills all other waiver requirements.
If your vehicle is required to receive an emissions inspection you may be eligible for a deferment from your Utah resident county. If required, the emissions inspection or county deferral must be transmitted from the county to DMV prior to a registration being completed.
1982 and newer vehicles: An emissions test is required every two years for vehicles more than seven model years old. Your vehicle registration renewal postcard will state whether or not a test is required, or if your vehicle has qualified for the roadside emissions test.
